In 1974, the CIA launched one of their most audacious covert ops ever.
Code name: Project Azorian.
The mission?
Recover a sunken Soviet nuclear submarine from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
17,000 feet down, at bone crushing depths, in the pitch black the submarine was packed with Cold War secrets. But the CIA couldn’t just send a military vessel without raising suspicions.
So they recruited an unlikely partner: Howard Hughes, the eccentric billionaire.
Using Hughes’ fortune and connections, they built a massive mining ship called the Glomar Explorer armed with a gigantic claw called “Clementine.”
The cover story?
They were mining strange metallic rocks from the ocean floor.
